THE JOYCE A. SCHULTHEISS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

2009 CTAM Joyce Schultheiss Memorial Scholarship Auditions - Great Success in Holland!

It was a lovely, rainy day in Holland, Michigan on Sunday, March the 8th.  But, the spring-like raindrops couldn't dampen the spirits of everyone involved in this year's CTAM Joyce Schultheiss Memorial Scholarship Auditions!  Holland Civic Theatre graciously played host to the Scholarship Committee as six of the finest, young, talented students from all over Michigan acted and sang their way into our hearts.

By the time all six high school and college theatre students were finished auditioning in front of the three adjudicators, Betsy Willis, Art Nemitz and Vincent Weiler had their work cut out for them as they deliberated on which of the eager students would receive the first and second place scholarship awards.  When they emerged, the results were in!  The Scholarships go to:

Brian Martin, a Western Michigan University Freshman, was awarded the first place scholarship in the amount of $2,700!  Brian is sponsored by Grand Rapids Civic Theatre.

Dylan Ratell, a Senior at Garber High School in Bay City, was awarded the second place scholarship in the amount of $900!  Dylan is sponsored by Bay City Players.

Ethan Hedeen, a Sophomore at Western Michigan University, is designated as the Alternate, which means if one of the other students is not able to meet all of the requirements for the scholarship, Ethan will be offered the second place scholarship. Ethan is sponsored by Rosedale Community Players.

The other three outstanding auditions of the day were performed by (in alphabetical order):

James Campbell, a Senior at Beaverton High School, sponsored by Gladwin Area Friends of the Theatre (GAFT).

Kori Bielaniec, a University of Detroit Mercy Senior, sponsored by The Players Guild of Dearborn.

Sarah Willis, a Senior at Okemos High School, sponsored by All-of-Us-Express Children's Theatre.

CTAM thanks all the volunteers who helped make the auditions flow like clockwork!  Terry and Carol Jolink, who represented Holland Civic and kept the committee well hydrated and nourished.  Kevin Arnett, who expertly kept time for each audition and served as the CTAM photographer.  Jack Arnett, who helped provide technical support.  Karen McHugh, who helped keep the Committee Chairperson sane.  Joanne Berry who arranged for the three wise adjudicators.  And of course the three Adjudicators themselves, Betsy Willis, Art Nemitz and Vincent Weiler.

The final big CTAM Thank You goes to our anonymous donor, who each year generously matches the raffle funds collected at the CTAM Fall Conference!!!  Thanks to this fine person, our Michigan Theatre Students' lives are made a bit easier as they carry our passion forward into the future.

Joyce Schultheiss Memorial Scholarship

Believing that the quality of theatre in Michigan can be enhanced by supporting those students pursuing a vocation or avocation in the arts at a Michigan institution of higher learning, CTAM established a scholarship program in 1973.

In 1980, it was renamed the Joyce Schultheiss Memorial Scholarship program and
dedicated in her memory. Schultheiss was a former CTAM president and was instrumental in creating the original scholarship program.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an audition with academic achievement and financial need being considered only in case of a tie.

CTAM's scholarship program is open to both acting and technical applicants.

To enter the scholarship competition, an applicant must be sponsored by a current CTAM member group.

Applicants must be a high school senior or college undergraduate who plans
to attend full-time a Michigan college or university with a major or minor in theatre
.

Applicants must provide certification of a GPA of 2.5 or better.

Each year CTAM accepts up to 30 qualified audition applicants on a first come basis.
