Your Conference Instructors
Kathie Johnson - Costume Designer for the jewish Theater and the West Michigan Thunderbird
Dance Team. Kathie is also a private contractor for several theater and performance groups in
the Grand Rapids area, and she has been constructing animal forms with function for a number
of years. These special props generally take the form of soft or semi-soft sculpture...some to be
ridden on, some used as puppets, or as a head pieces. Sharing several examples of her work as
well as photographs, she will address and model the process of creating such unique pieces,
pros and cons of various materials, glues that work well with foam, and finishing the product
with fabric or paints. And, why she advises us all to buy stock in Static Guard!
Rosanne Steffens - Opera Grand Rapids Stage Manager since 1990 - Acting Teacher, Designer,
Director for Grand Rapids Civic Theatre School of Theatre Arts since 1993. This workshop will
teach that It’s not about power. It’s about management. Auditions, taping out the stage floor,
blocking notation, calling a show, and more. How to keep your production efficient, fun, and
frantic free.
David Len - Scenic Designer for Grand Rapids Civic Theatre - Learn a variety of deceptively
simple faux painting techniques the professionals use to create sets that seem to be made of
real wooden planks, speckled tiles, marble, brick, you name it.
Jean Bahle - Adjunct Professor in Theatre Department at Hope College - 30 years in West
Michigan theatre as an actor, director, teacher, and playwright.
Fred Sebulske Retired Head of Grand Rapids Community College Theatre Department, and
Founder of Actors’ Theatre in Grand Rapids.
Jean and Fred work together with this workshop
and will offer condensed fundamentals for new or experienced directors to sharpen their focus
on what really matters when working with actors. In three parts, the workshop will focus on
the experiential: (1) exercises to address physlcallty, (2) exercises for ensemble building, and
(3) dlrect scene work to explore Interpretatlon, communlcatlon, and technlque. Wear
comfortable, non-restrictive clothlng.
