BREAKING NEWS

Escanaba places in Region III AACTfest competition!

After a great weekend of theatre and much gnashing of teeth, the winners have been announced for the Region III AACTfest.

Although we didn’t win one of the two top slots, assuring progressing to the nationals, one of our Michigan entries (Escanaba) was “first runner-up,” so to speak. Our other entry (Ann Arbor) wowed the audiences and judges, winning several acting and technical awards. Michigan was very well represented with two spectacular plays and, if Escanaba for any reason goes on to Nationals, they will do us proud again!

Here’s a list of all the shows entered in the Regional AACTFest:

Michigan

Some Things You Need to Know Before the World Ends (A Final Evening with the Illuminati)
(Alternate Representative to Nationals)- Players de Noc, Escanaba

Indiana

Master Classes Announced!

Register Now

CTAM is offering two master classes this summer. They will be held at the Ralph A. MacMullen Conference Center at Higgins Lake on July 19-21, 2013.

Solving Directors’ Problems
Leeds Bird returns as an instructor for the directing class, "Is a Puzzlement: Solving Directors’ Problems." The focus will be on issues direc-tors commonly face: Coordinating production elements through scheduling, dealing with "difficult" cast members, moving large num-bers of actors around in musicals and non-musicals, making cast choices, and telling your story with effective stage pictures. Class members are invited to bring their own issues for brain-storming solutions.

Leeds is a retired high school drama teacher and a long time director at Bay City Play-ers. He has a B.A. and M.A in theatre from Michigan State University and has experience as a professional actor, director, and graduate level theatre instructor.

Marketing, Promotion, and Using Social Media
The second Master Class will be taught by Nancy Brozek, Director of Development and Community Relations for Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. Plans include an overview of branding, tips on working with the media, how to tell your story, insight on how to keep your message fresh, and why social media is becoming so important to your thea-tre and how to make it your best friend. Par-ticipants are asked to bring a laptop or tablet to this class.

Nancy has been at the Civic Theatre since 2010. Before that she worked as the Director of the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan and the Development Director of the Grand Rapids Children's Museum. She has a passion for the importance of volunteerism and is a member of her church council, a volunteer with the Grand Rapids Cultural Marketing Group and the WGVU Engage Pro-gram

The Master Classes begin after dinner on Friday and conclude early Sunday afternoon. Tuition for a Master Class is $60 for CTAM individual members and $70 for others.

Housing for the weekend, including Friday dinner and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday, is $170.50 for double occupancy or $203.50 for a single. You can register via our online web form here!

Celebrate Your Volunteers!
(article from the April 2013 Callboard)

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the ordinary people who accomplish extraordi-nary things through ser-vice. The entire month of April has been set aside to honor those who give of their time and energy to serve a greater cause. Established in 1974 by former President Richard Nixon, it has grown exponentially in scope each year since, drawing the support and endorse-ment of all subsequent U.S. presidents, gover-nors, mayors and other respected officials.

Volunteers range in age from high school students to seniors, but their purpose is the same: Giving volunteer time and resources to support organizations that benefit people and causes. This philanthropy is often rewarded only with the satisfaction of knowing that they helped. Volunteers should be recognized if you want to keep them coming back again and again!

Celebrating National Volunteer Month is an opportunity for us to say “Thank You” to our members and volunteers who keep community theatres running!

If your theatre group is recognizing volunteers during the month, you may want to also nominate them for one of two awards offered by CTAM. The first is the Robert A. McKenna Award. CTAM's most prestigious award was established in 1987 to honor Robert A. McKenna, a longtime CTAM friend, supporter and consummate actor in Michigan who epitomized the spirit of community theatre.

The McKenna is presented annually at our fall conference to a living person who exhibits, through action, commitment and dedication, his or her support of community theatre on the state and local levels. A nomination may be submitted for the Board's consideration by any current CTAM group member or current CTAM individual member.

The second award is the Dorothy Arnett Volunteer Service Award is presented by CTAM to your members whom you nominate who have given valuable, long-term service (at least ten years) to your theatre organization. CTAM grants up to six such awards per year and they are presented by a CTAM representative at your theatre function to honor the recipient(s).

The nomination deadline for both awards is July 1, 2013, and more information and the nomination forms can be found on our website. Celebrate your Volunteers this month!
